I am always thrilled to assist individuals in their weight loss journey. Obesity, as we know, is a significant contributor to many life-threatening diseases. By helping patients shed excess weight, we not only boost their self-esteem but also potentially reduce their risk of heart disease and cancer. It’s fascinating to see how weight loss can make patients look and feel younger with each visit.
Patients often ask me, “What are the best weight loss injectables in Hong Kong?” Is it weekly Wegovy, Zepbound, or Mounjaro, and is the daily Saxenda just an expensive thing of the past?
Having used Saxenda for over three years, even before they gained widespread popularity, I can share my experience with you. Currently, in Hong Kong, only these two weight loss injections (semifluid and liraglutide) are available for prescription. I understand that this may limit your options, but rest assured, these are effective treatments.
SIDE EFFECTS OF WEIGHT LOSS INJECTIONS
Firstly, we must have reasonable expectations when taking any weight loss injection. In 80 to 90% of people, Saxenda will work within a few days, and most will feel mild nausea, which tends to wear off. The lucky 5% will get no side effects from a weight loss shot, and 5% might get digestive side effects such as constipation, heartburn, or severe nausea. Also, rare, actual vomiting, diarrhoea, or low blood sugar attacks may be a reason to stop or change the brand of weight loss injection.
In my experience, individual response varies to weight loss injections. Some patients find daily Saxenda more effective and also can have fewer side effects. Obviously, having a daily injection is not very user-friendly, so everyone tends to go for the weekly; however, there are always options to change.
So what’s the difference in side effects between Saxenda, or even Mounjaro (if you’re in another country)?
Well, firstly,(Semiglutide) is the same drug as Wegovy under a different trade name. Similarly, Mounjaro and Zepbound (Tirzepatide).
Mounjaro is different from although both are weekly weight loss injections, and they’re roughly the same price, Mounjaro does have a slightly more advanced chemical formulation to aid weight loss. Basically, it appears to be about 10% more effective.
Of course it’s very effective for losing weight, but we all know that unfortunately this weight can be regained quite quickly. This is why it’s super important to learn to change your diet right in the beginning. Lose your preference for tasty fried food, and develop a desire for simple vegetables and salads!
In the next email, I’ll be giving advice I give patients about not regaining the weight, changing your dietary preferences and how to get off these very effective weight loss injections.
