Sophrology
As an introduction to Sophrology: If we cannot change the world, we can definitely change the way we relate to it and choose to make the most out of our life
What Is Sophrology?
Sophrology is a discipline designed to train your mind to live a happier, healthier life.
Sophrology will teach you to place your mind in the areas that build you, that nourish you, rather than having your mind morn for the past, think endlessly about things you cannot change, worry for the future, or anticipate what might never occur.
You will learn easy to use and efficient tools to:
- Detect and better enjoy the pleasant areas of your life
- Be present to the moment
- Overcome difficulties whether they are emotional or physical
Along this journey, you will be empowered to take responsibility for designing YOUR life, according to your strengths, resources, values. You will re-experience the subtle joy of being yourself with your mind and body at peace.
Where Does Sophrology Come From?
Sophrology originated in Spain, in the 1960’s by Professor Caycedo, a doctor specializing in psychiatry and neurology.
It is a combination of:
- Oriental traditions: Yoga, Zen and Buddhist meditation
- Western techniques and philosophies: Psychology, Relaxation, Hypnoses
Blended into a unique structured discipline designed for modern living to train your mind and body for a more conscious and enjoyable life.
Why Haven’t I Heard Of Sophrology Before?
Sophrology is fairly new to the English speaking world. However it is very well established and popular in continental Europe, especially France, Switzerland, Spain and Italy. More and more health insurance companies in France and Switzerland now include cover of Sophrology sessions as part of any broad- based health insurance plan.
Sophrology schools are now opening in English, and Sophrology is recognized by the UK Institute of Complementary and Natural Medicine.

Can You Tell Me More About A Typical Session?
First of all, sessions are all tailored to better meet YOUR needs.
During the Sophrology practice, I will guide you vocally through a 2 step approach:
1.A deep dynamic relaxation: where your body feels relaxed yet your mind remains fully alert
2- A specific exercise relating to your key objective: In this enjoyable state, you will experiment a specific exercise using very practical set of tools: relaxation, breathing, meditation, visualization and simple movements. Most people experience sessions in a very positive way.
Sessions can be face to face or on-line. Before each practice, I will explain to you the objectives and sequences of the session. After the practice, I will encourage you to share your experience of the session itself and we will discuss how you can further practice by yourself.
“I always record the practice so that you can carry it out by yourself and improve faster between our sessions.”
Sessions are available in English and in French, face to face or on-line and last between 45min to an hour.
How Does Sophrology Compare With Psychology?
Although Sophrology helps us feel at peace, this does not involve in-depth analysis as with Psychology. Sophrology allows us to reflect and adapt our behaviors as our awareness grows. The transformation arises from repeated practice – a very dynamic way to engage mind, body and emotions. Sophrology suits those who want to solve painful issues or manage challenging situations, but without an in-depth analytical approach. Sophrology and Psychology can, of course, be used to complement each other.
How Does Sophrology Compare With Mindfulness?
Mindfulness and Sophrology have many similarities. They both take their origins in eastern meditation, and are absolutely non-religious, so they can complement whatever your world view happens to be. One of the main differences you would experience right from the beginning, is that all Sophrology practices start with a deep relaxation and offer many strategies to keep the mind still and present, as we tune into our inner resources to address particular life or health issues. Sophrology is very good for people who find it difficult to meditate.
How Does Sophrology Compare With Other Approaches Such As Yoga Etc?
All approaches offer different benefits and it is for the individual to decide which might suit them best. The power of Sophrology lies in its combined approach – working on body and mind together. Being in a state of dynamic relaxation makes it easier to focus the mind, enabling you to examine your physical and mental being at a profound level. You learn to take responsibility for your own life and health and how to deal with a range of issues and symptoms.
Does It Really Work?
Yes! I encourage you to read some of my clients’ testimonials on my website www.sophrology.hk to know more about my clients’ results. Follow my recommendations, practice and be open minded! Sophrology is not a magic wand, but all my clients who have practiced with an open heart and mind confirm that it really works.
Starting From When Will I Feel Better?
Most of my clients experience a better being after a few sessions. At the beginning, it can be around feeling the body more relaxed, the mind quieter, and globally feeling energized, Often after a few sessions, they say they become more conscious, and relate to themselves and others with greater kindness and optimism. The results they experience help them get further involved in the practice.
How Are You Different From Other Sophrologists, Therapists?
The main difference for me lies into the importance I give to helping you reach autonomy. It is at the heart of how I teach Sophrology. I really want to discover what works best for you according to your needs and lifestyle and how you can implement it in your daily life. So that you feel empowered to take care of your better being.
Do I need to prepare in a way before the sessions?
No, just come with your body and an open mind. Sophrology is all about helping you in your everyday life wherever you are. So no need for special cloths, or special equipment.
How Sophrology can help students fight their stress at school and / or before exams.
