Staying Healthy in Hong Kong

Posted on February 28, 2016 by Dr. Susan Jamieson in Health In Hong Kong

Staying Healthy in Hong KongWe live in a vibrant, exciting city, but staying healthy in Hong Kong can be challenging. In any very large, busy city, there are threats to our health that deserve our attention. Today we’ll look at a few of those.

Do What You Can to Improve Air Quality

I recently wrote about air pollution in Hong Kong, and how to stay healthy. The biggest tip there is to make sure you have clean, filtered air as you sleep (1/3 of your day, while your body is resting and repairing). It’s also important to pay attention to air quality warning levels on the news, or on your smart phone, and limit your activities on days when the air quality is bad.

Filter Your Water At Home

You’ve probably seen news stories about lead poisoning, or other stories concerned with the quality of Hong Kong water. Again, you can make a big difference for your health by filtering your water. Even a simple countertop jug filter is far better than nothing.

Wash Your Hands

Make a habit of washing your hands as soon as you reach your home or office. You’ll find that this simple step can greatly reduce the germs you’re exposed to during your commute to and from work.

Get Sun When You Can

Try to get some sun when the opportunity prevents. Even a brief bit of sun exposure on your lunch break allows your skin to absorb a little vitamin D. If you know you’re just not getting enough sun, consider a vitamin D supplement.

Handle Stress

Anxiety has been proven to be more common in city dwellers. You may find that a yoga or Tai Chi class, or a brief meditation session a few times per week, can really help you handle stress. A little extra pampering time on busy days is good too – perhaps a hot bath with Epsom salts? You live in a city with excellent acupuncture treatments available, and those are very helpful for stress.

Get Good Sleep

If you’re not sleeping well, it can really wear you down fast. If it’s noisy where you sleep, consider a white noise machine or earplugs. If you just can’t get to sleep, try to get off the computer or tablet earlier, and away from the TV before bedtime. Exposure to electronics has been proven to make it harder to sleep. If you’re really struggling with sleep, make an appointment at our clinic. We can help.

Eat Your Greens

Make sure you’re getting some fresh green vegetables in your diet. It’s easy, especially in a big city like Hong Kong, to grab fast food an miss out on the health benefits of fresh vegetables and fruit. If you can get into the habit of daily green smoothies (even every other day helps), you’ll probably feel the difference as your body is flooded with the nutrients and antioxidants you’ve been missing. They help you clear out toxins too!

Speaking of Toxins – Detoxify!

Whether it’s adding cilantro to your smoothies and salads, or learning about the powers of spirulina and chlorella, your body needs a bit of extra help to detoxify from the pollutants you’re exposed to in a large city like Hong Kong. Staying healthy in Hong Kong means working with your doctor to prevent issues before they arise.
