Covid-19 Info
There are many quick health tests that are available through our integrative clinic. They can be administered by our nurse at any time, from a finger-prick of blood, a urine sample, mouth swab, breath test or a skin patch test. As the results can be difficult to interpret, you are better to review them with one of our specialist doctors. Knowledge is power – health testing can help you identify the root cause of many issues so that they can be resolved.
Specialty Tests
Food Allergy Test
The Food Allergy/Intolerance Test uses double patterns of highly specific antibodies for a large numbers of different foods, beverages, preservatives and additives commonly used by food industries, to help us identify allergies and intolerances. We will be able to detect by a fingertip blood prick the presence of food IG antibodies. Thanks to the latest bio-markers, this immunological test claims 100% sensitivity, specificity and accuracy.
How does it work?
We will need 10 minutes of your time to collect the sample by a fingertip blood prick and will get results the next day. This is for the 46 most common food issues (1600 HKD). If you prefer, we can also do a blood test for 118 different food issues, which will take 5 days for results (4500 HKD), or 186 foods with results back in 3 weeks (5900 HKD).
Why should I take this test?
A food allergy or intolerance can trigger an immune reaction based on inflammatory activities. This general inflammatory status is a physiological process that your body carries out to protect itself. However a pathological chronic inflammatory status, can lead to multiple serious health problems such as cancer, infertility, diabetes, migraine, mood disorders, asthma, bronchitis, rheumatoid arthritis, eczema, chronic fatigue syndrome, gastrointestinal disorders, glaucoma, kidney problems, seizures, weight gain, heart palpitations, depression, and even cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis, among other conditions.
Coeliac Test
Coeliac (or Celiac) disease is only one medical condition caused by gluten. Many people have other issues caused by gluten, such as intolerances causing abdominal bloating, for example.
How does it work?
We will need 10 minutes of your time to collect a sample by a fingertip blood prick, and in less than 2 hours we will give you a detailed report of the test with specific conclusions and advice to follow. (300 HKD)
Why should I take this test?
Identifying issues with gluten can be the key to resolving longstanding issues such as gastrointestinal reflux, leaky gut disease, digestive discomfort, flatulence, arthritis and more. Once you know of an intolerance, you can heal instead of continuing to trigger painful and potentially dangerous issues.
Neurotransmitters Profile (Brain’s Happy Hormones)
This neurotransmitter test identifies levels of GABA, Glutamate, Glycine, Dopamine, Epinephrine, Norepinephrine, Histamine, 5-Hydroxyindoleacetic Acid (5-HT), Phenethylamine (PEA), Creatinine.
How does it work?
You have to collect a first morning urine specimen using a urine sample bottle, available at our office. Within 3 weeks we will have your report. (4500HKD)
Why should I take this test?
Testing neurotransmitters can help target specific psychological imbalances – getting to the root of persistent issues such as insomnia, depression, fatigue, poor memory, mood disorders and anxiety. It provides a diagnostic edge over the typical psychological inventory.
Sleep Balance Profile
This health test covers Melatonin & Free Cortisol (Hormones of stress, sleep, anti-ageing)
How does it work?
You have to collect a first morning urine specimen and then 3 other sample during the day using a general urine sample bottle, available at our office. Within 3 weeks we will give you a report. (4600 HKD)
Why should I take this test?
Adequate sleep has long been known to be vital to good health. Melatonin, a hormone produced by the pineal gland during the dark phase of the light/dark cycle, regulates the sleep/wake cycle and the “biological clock”. However, it is now known also to have free radical scavenging and antioxidant properties and a significant role in stimulating the immune system to protect against the growth of abnormal tissues such as breast and prostate cancers. Melatonin is also neuroprotective. Adequate melatonin production during the night, as well as suppression of production during the day by exposure to daylight, form a balance that is vital to optimal health. It’s anti-ageing, and has been implicated in Alzheimer’s. Circulating melatonin is changed in the liver to form its primary metabolite, 6-sulfatoxymelatonin (MT6s), and excreted into urine; it is this metabolite that is measured in the Sleep Balance Profile.
Essential Nutrients & Heavy Metals Testing
This health test is useful when trying to identify issues with energy and general wellness levels. In a large city such as Hong Kong, exposure to heavy metals and industrial contaminants can be a risk. This is a preliminary test of the presence of toxic metals mercury (organic/inorganic), lead, arsenic, aluminum, nickel, tin, tungsten, cadmium, as well as essential copper, magnesium, potassium, calcium, chromium, and zinc. The full listing of 28 metals covered by this test includes those it is essential we have adequate nutritional intake of for optimal bodily function, as well as those metals that are toxic to us and enter via many natural and man-made sources.
How does it work?
You have to collect a first morning urine specimen using our urine sample bottle, then take an oral tablet (chelating agent) and within 3 hours collect a second urine sample. Within 3 weeks we will give you a report. (3900 HKD)
Why should I take this test?
This is an important test because heavy metals are strongly associated with excessive free radical activity, which can cause damage to the healthy state of the body including depleting the body’s immune system. Free radicals cause cancer. In 20 years of testing we have found heavy metals common in the Western and HK population.
- Long term exposure to cadmium is associated with renal dysfunction, obstructive lung diseases, lung cancer and bone defects.
- Long term exposure of chromium can cause kidney and liver damage and it can also cause damage to circulatory and nerve tissues.
- High or low doses of copper can cause hormone issues, anaemia, liver and kidney damage, and stomach and intestinal irritation.
- High exposure to lead can cause severe tiredness, problems in making haemoglobins, kidney damage, also adverse affects to gastrointestinal tract, joints, reproductive system and the nervous system.
- Inorganic mercury poisoning is associated with tiredness, depression, tremors, together with miscarriage and congenital malformation.
- Mono-methyl-mercury causes damage to the brain and the central nervous system while fetal and post-natal exposures have given rise to miscarriage, congenital malformation and development changes in young children.
- Long term exposure of nickel can cause decreased body weight, heart and liver damage and skin irritation.
- Exposure to high levels of arsenic can cause death, kidney and liver damage.
- Manganese, whilst essential for health, in toxic doses is is known to block calcium channels and with chronic exposure results in CNS dopamine depletion.
- Aluminium toxicity is associated with the development of bone disorders including fractures, osteopenia and osteomalacia. Also, of course associated with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
Environmental Pollutants Profile
The Environmental Pollutants Test will screen for 172 different environmental pollutants using 18 different metabolites (break-down products), all from a single urine sample: including organophosphate pesticides, phthalates, benzene, xylene, vinyl chloride, pyrethroid insecticides, acrylamide, perchlorate, diphenyl phosphate, ethylene oxide, and acrylonitrile. This test also measures Tiglylglycine (TG) – a marker for mitochondrial disorders resulting from mutations of mitochondrial DNA. This causes tiredness/muscle pains.
Scientifically, this test uses Advanced mass spectrometry (MS/MS), which is necessary to detect lower levels of certain genetic, mitochondrial, and toxic chemical markers that conventional mass spectrometry often misses.
How does it work?
You have to collect a first morning urine specimen using a general urine sample bottle, available at our office. Within 3 weeks you get the report (4900HKD)
Why should I take this test?
You will identify the impact of environmental pollutants with an easy-to-do urine test, allowing you to take steps to remedy your exposure. Every day, we are exposed to hundreds of toxic chemicals from sources like plastics, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, household products, and our environment.
As we have become more exposed to chemical-laden products and to toxic chemicals in food, air, and water, we have been confronted with an accelerating rate of chronic diseases, chronic fatigue, behavioral, and autoimmune disorders. To combat this, our toxic non-metal chemical profile screens for the presence of 172 different toxic chemicals.
Metabolic Energy Profile
Here we test vitamin and nutrient sufficiency (inc. vit B2, B5, B6, B9, B12, C, biotin); Oxidative stress and antioxidant sufficiency (causes cancer and heart disease) inc. ketones, amino acids; Detoxification (inc. glutathione, aspartame, GI bacteria); Neurotransmitter metabolites causing depression/anxiety.-(inc. dopamine, epinephrine, serotonin); Mitochondrial efficiency (metabolites of Krebs cycle); Lipoic acid and CoQ10 sufficiency, as well as gut flora impacting metabolism (inc. yeast and fungi, bacteria).
How does it work?
You have to collect a first morning urine specimen using a general urine sample bottle, available at our office. Within 3 weeks we will give you a report (4900HKD)
Why should I take this test?
The powerhouses of every cell in the human body, mitochondria are the last stop for extracting energy from food and oxygen. There are multitudes of reasons why mitochondria fail to perform efficiently, ranging from nutrient deficiencies to genetic predispositions. Assessing mitochondrial function through overflow of organic acids, this test evaluates the metabolites for vitamins and nutrients, oxidation markers, gut flora, metabolism, and Krebs cycle, which all impact on energy efficiency and the production of ATP (Our energy source).
SIBO Breath Test
The SIBO test is a Hydrogen Breath Test (or HBT) for people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and common food intolerances. The test is simple, non-invasive, and is performed after a short period of fasting (typically 8-12 hours).
How does it work?
You have to have a specific diet a day before, then 12 hours fasting. The test will be performed at home: you need to breathe in a bag every 20 mins (need to collect 10 samples). Within 3 weeks we will give you a report, on whether you have certain curable intestinal bacteria which are causing your problems. (3493 HKD)
Why should I take this test?
Our Hong Kong Gut Health Centre is a powerful resource for resolving persistent digestive issues – once you know which bacteria are out of balance, we’ll know what steps to take to help you recover vibrant health and end gut discomfort and other symptoms.
GI-MAP™ And Zonulin Test
The GI-MAP™ (GI-Microbial Assay Plus) stool test utilizes cutting edge, FDA-approved technology to provide a true DNA/PCR based stool analysis which provides actionable information to the clinician regarding the gut bacteria and how it relates to many inflammatory, autoimmune, metabolic, cardiovascular, and other chronic diseases. This technology has high accuracy rate and a rapid turnaround.
How does it work?
You have to collect one sample of stool and bring back to our office. Within 3 weeks we will give you a report. (8000HKD)
Why should I take this test?
Firstly, we find any pathogens which should not be in your gut! We test for the DNA of :
24 types of bacteria, 5 types of fungus, 7 types of parasites, 7 types of virus
Obviously, once we identify these “invader” bacteria, we can treat them.
At the same time, we test for beneficial bacteria –Bacteroides fragilis, Bifidobacterium, Enterococcus, Escherichia, Lactobacillus.
In addition, we test for Zonulin, which is the ‘leaky gut’ enzyme.
It’s a clinically useful marker of intestinal permeability. It is synthesized in liver and intestinal cells. Intestinal permeability has been associated with several auto-immune, inflammatory, and neoplastic diseases, including Rheumatoid Arthritis, Asthma, IBS, IBD, eczema and food sensitivity reactions. In a healthy GI tract, the tight junctions between cells prevent influx of toxic gut contents. However, certain situations, such as over-antibiotic use, excess sugars over time, and the presence of gluten for people with celiac disease or NCGS (non-celiac gluten sensitivity), can lead to high levels of zonulin in the GI tract. This can induce the breakdown of the tight celular junctions, leading to intestinal permeability and allowing zonulin to enter the bloodstream. What’s more, zonulin is the only regulator of intestinal permeability known to be reversible, which makes it valuable in monitoring therapeutic interventions as well.
