Feeling under the Weather?

Posted on March 18, 2011 by Dr. Susan Jamieson in Emotional Health

Many people accept low level symptoms of illness as “normal”, living with them rather than seeking help — and a cure.  Perhaps because they’re busy, perhaps because they don’t think that their “illness” will be taken seriously by the medical profession.

under-the-weather-dreamstime_10070063At Holistic Central 15 professionals provide more than 20 therapies, bringing together western medicine with alternative holistic therapies in the quest for total wellness — and we diagnose and treat illness in many different ways taking a holistic view of wellbeing.

Some of the most common low-level ailments suffered and tolerated are a result of stress and /or problems with diet, whether it be deficiencies, intolerances, allergies or bad digestion.

Common diet or stress-related ailments:

  • Abdominal bloating and discomfort after eating certain foods or sugary foods
  • Asthma or eczema
  • Migraine
  • Continuous runny nose and sniffing
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Difficulty making decisions
  • Difficulty getting around to doing things
  • No interest in sex
  • Frequent urination
  • Constipation
  • Catching every cold that goes around
  • Premenstrual syndrome
  • Stress-related headaches
  • Heart palpitations
  • Sleep problems
  • Fear that something terrible is going to happen

The basis of a lot of ‘complementary’ therapies is the so-called ‘Mind -body Connection’ which suggests that we can’t separate our thoughts and emotions from the physical effects they have on our bodies and physiology. This ‘alternative’ view on health is now becoming accepted within the medical profession as neuropsychiatrists are ‘proving’ in the lab what has been intuitively  “known” by indigenous wisdom for centuries.

Following is a list of just some of the therapies practised at Holistic Central. You can click onwards to read more about individual therapies. To book a consultation, please call 2523 8044.

Food Allergy Laboratory Pin Prick Test

We can arrange the fast and accurate Laboratory Pin Prick Test which can identify allergies and intolerances to 113 foods. Your doctor would then advise on the results and how to manage your diet to avoid or exclude the danger foods.

This test is far faster than the traditional method of identifying allergies by keeping a food diary and slowly isolating out suspect foods, and returns the patient to a better quality of life far sooner.

Naturopathy & Homeopathy

Naturopathy is an umbrella term for natural therapies and may include the use of homeopathy, herbal medicine, nutrition, counselling and massage to treat the patient holistically.

Naturopathy is safe in pregnancy and for children, and is used to effectively treat most conditions including headaches, anxiety, colds and flu, low resistance to infections, nutritional deficiencies, digestive problems, urinary tract infections, pregnancy, fertility, PMS and other hormonal imbalances.

Traditional Chinese Medicine, Kinesiology and BodyTalk

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, illness is seen as a block or imbalance in a person’s vital energy or ‘Chi’, and in good health the ‘Chi’ flows undisturbed. If the ‘Chi’ become blocked, this then is the source of illness and acupuncture is used to re-establish well being.

Kinesiology is recognized as effective in treating many allergies and intolerances. Using the Muscle Response Technique to identify weakness in the body’s energy circuits, the therapist can diagnose such things as candida syndrome, food intolerance or nutritional deficiencies.

The therapist can then correct these issues using a variety of techniques such as  acupressure, meridian balancing, elimination of  toxic metals or by providing supplements which are known to strengthen the body. Kinesiology helps to improve the effectiveness of the immune system. BodyTalk is a form of kinesiology.

Mind and Body

Clinical psychologists can provide relief for people suffering “serious” mental illnesses, but they can also provide practical tips and assistance for people suffering stress.

While stress might be considered something you just deal with, if there is help out there it might be an idea to take it when you consider the seriousness of just some of the symptoms of stress – ulcers, migraines, back pains, sleepless nights, binging, smoking, alcoholism, etc.

Similarly, a hypnotherapist can help change behaviours and anxieties that have become ingrained in the subconscious so changing negative patterns into positive patterns of behavior.

And finally, we can’t forget the power of touch. Professional massage is not to be confused with a spa massage. It will relieve the stress of the physical knots as well as release endorphins that provide a feeling of well-being, but our professionally trained therapists use massage — Rolfing, Lymphatic, Therapeutic and Intuitive — has been proven to improve the immune and digestive systems, and best of all, relieve or rid the body of ongoing pains.

So if you are feeling under the weather, don’t. Nowadays the doctor has more in his/her “black bag” than cod liver oil and aspirin. To learn more about any of the therapies at Holistic Central, please visit our web or call 2523 8044.
